This is a tumour of the pleura (chest wall lining) and is the most serious complication of asbestos exposure.
The tumour often develops forty of fifty years after the initial asbestos exposure.
Symptoms include severe breathlessness that occurs over a relatively short period of time and is usually associated with some chest pain or discomfort.
Surgical procedures are required to confirm a diagnosis.
On average, mesothelioma patients survive for eighteen months to two years after diagnosis. Currently, there is no known cure for malignant mesothelioma.
